Over 1.6 million households in Australia, and 37% of the 2482 postcode have solar panels on their roof! The benefits of solar are now so tangible many people are upgrading by installing more solar on their home.
The price of solar installations have plummeted while electricity bills are soaring and interest rates are very low. So these days buying solar gives you a great return on your investment. Installations usually pay for themselves in around 4-7 years – depending how much solar electricity you use, and how much you can sell your excess solar electricity for to the grid.
People can get a bit confused by all the solar information available and different companies promoting different offers. Here is some information others have found useful to de-mystify solar.
We hope this information helps. We appreciate you taking the Repower Byron Shire pledge – Ethical use, reduce and produce. By embracing these 3 steps we can ensure Byron Shire is driving a clean energy revolution!
This up to date information from Choice is great to explain the basics of solar. Check out their guide here – Solar Panels Buying Guide.
How much does it cost/ What will I save
Prices do vary, but this link shows average solar prices, while here is a solar payback calculator.
What size system do I need?
These days many people ‘oversize’ their system. Larger systems are cheaper per kilowatt to buy and feed in tariffs (the price you get paid for exporting electricity) are rising so households are now often installing 5 to 10 kW systems. An article explains this here – Bigger is now better for roof top solar . (Our local community electricity retailer Enova Energy is leading the pack and offers a feed in tariff of 16 cents per kW/hr).
If you are a tenant but still want solar?
This movement is for everyone in Byron Shire who wants to help renewables take their long awaited place in the sun. We all have a part to play, even if you are already powered by renewable energy, we need your help to inspire friends and neighbours to make the change you already have.
